The European Parliament has adopted a resolution calling for a strong set of consumer protection rights in the context of artificial intelligence (AI) and automated decision-making. The resolution states that automated decision-making systems should use only high-quality and unbiased data sets, as well as explainable and unbiased algorithms. Consumers must be properly informed about how such systems function and how its decisions can be checked and corrected. The resolution also calls for a common EU approach to help ensure that the benefits of AI and automated decision-making systems are fully explored and the risks are mitigated across the EU. In addition, the Parliament calls on the European Commission to elaborate proposals on how to adapt the EU's safety rules for products to ensure that consumers are protected from harms and producers are clear on their obligations.
