Cisco Named to Dow Jones Sustainability Index for 9th Year in a Row

Sep, 29, 2014 Hi-network.com

Cisco was recently named to the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) World and the DJSI North America for the 9th year in a row, based on a thorough analysis of our economic, social, and environmental performance. The DJSI recognizes Cisco among the 80 most sustainable companies in the world, and among the 40 most sustainable companies in North America. New issues covered in the 2014 survey were tax strategy, CSR materiality assessments, and additional human capital development and health and safety measurements.

We value our inclusion on the DJSI for many reasons. First, it allows us to benchmark our year-over-year performance measurements such as corporate governance, risk management, climate change strategy, supply chain standards, labor practices, and social investment programs. The DJSI allows us to track our performance in these areas and others against both peer companies and our previous results.

Second, it helps us identify emerging issues that are increasingly material to society, our company, and our industry. By carefully analyzing any new section topics, questions or weightings -we can  request guidance from relevant internal and external stakeholders to  adjust programs, goals/objectives, and resources appropriately.

And finally, our inclusion in the DJSI demonstrates our commitment to and investment in CSR. At Cisco, we are dedicated to making a positive impact on society and the planet. Experts from across the company work together to create social and environmental best practices, enabling us to earn such distinctions as being named one of the "World's Most Ethical Companies," one of the "100 Best Companies to Work For," and number 11 on the "Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations" index for 2014.

Some of our key accomplishments from Fiscal Year 2013 were:

  • We continued to successfully implement our human rights roadmap aligned to the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.
  • 100% of key manufacturing partners and logistics providers and 97% of key component suppliers responded to our sustainability survey.
  • We provided more than 3.1 million hours of learning and development activities for our employees.
  • Employees volunteered 129,000 hours to support their communities, up 20% from the previous year.
  • Cisco and the Cisco Foundation provided a total of$297 million to community partners in cash and in-kind products.
  • We achieved a 28% absolute reduction in Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions worldwide from a FY07 baseline and set new and aggressive Scope 1, 2, and business-air-travel Scope 3 GHG emissions reduction goals for FY17.

Leading CSR companies, IT sector peers, customers, socially responsible investors, and other important stakeholders continue to stress the importance of the DJSI, now in its 15th year, in effectively measuring a company's CSR performance.
